Middle School Summer Program

This half-day, four-week academic program provides an opportunity for students entering Grades 5-8 to get an academic boost or strengthen skills to prepare for the next grade level.

Combining intensive study and small-group learning, this program provides individual attention and student engagement. Students may take one or two classes, either for remediation or enhancement.

Courses are taught by Gulliver Prep teachers and follow the Gulliver Prep curriculum with a summer twist of engaging activities and class themes.

Course Descriptions

Math Readiness, Grade 5

The Math Readiness Grade 5 summer course will help students grasp key concepts in alignment with the Common Core State Standards. Students will concentrate on building and strengthening foundational skills including arithmetic, number sense, and problem-solving. Students will also engage in activities designed to develop then test their understanding of math concepts such as operations, fractions, decimals, and geometry. Evaluation methods will include ongoing and final assessments, projects, and regular practice to ensure students are ready for success in 5th grade math.

Math Readiness, Grade 6

The Math Readiness Grade 6 summer course will help students develop important math in alignment with the Common Core State Standards. A strong emphasis will be placed on building and strengthening foundational skills such as number sense, basic operations, ratios, and expressions while applying them towards real-life scenarios and problem solving activities. Evaluation methods will include ongoing and final assessments, projects, and regular practice to ensure students are ready for success in 6th grade math.

Math Readiness, Grade 7

The Math Readiness Grade 7 course aims to help students build a strong foundation in important math concepts aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Students will explore various math ideas with a focus on understanding key principles and utilizing them when problem-solving. The course highlights exploration of basic operations, ratios, expressions, equations, and geometry. Students will learn through hands-on activities and teamwork, applying math to real-world situations. Evaluation methods will include ongoing and final assessments, projects, and regular practice to ensure students are ready for success in 7th grade math.

Math Readiness, Grade 8

The Math Readiness Grade 8 course will help students understand important math ideas in preparation for 8th grade. Lessons will be aligned with the Common Core State Standards and cover number sense, equations, and geometry. The course utilizes problem-solving strategies and real-world examples to improve critical math thinking skills. The goal is to build a strong foundation of essential math skills, focusing on comprehension, fluency, and the practical applications of math. Evaluation methods will include ongoing and final assessments, projects, and regular practice to ensure students are ready for success in 8th grade math.

Math Bridge Grades 6 - 8

The Math Bridge 6 – 8 course will provide the opportunity for students to learn and reinforce Pre-Algebra skills before they enroll in Algebra during the academic school year. This course is intended for enhancement and requires a teacher recommendation.

MCK Summer Reads Grades 5 & 6

The MCK Summer Reads Grades 5 & 6 course is designed to reinforce essential reading skills taught during the school year. Students will read the Gulliver MCK’s 5th and 6th grade summer reading selections. They will practice reading skills that encourage independent learning and thinking. Students will also use journal entries and activities to incorporate literary elements and vocabulary derived from the selected text.

MCK Summer Reads Grades 7 & 8

The MCK Summer Reads Grades 7 & 8 course is designed to reinforce essential reading skills taught during the school year. Students will read the Gulliver MCK’s 7th and 8th grade summer reading selections while working on developing the fundamental skills necessary to succeed in a literature class. Students will engage in in-depth character analysis and vocabulary study. Reading comprehension strategies will also be reinforced, as well as the fundamentals of paragraph and essay writing.

The Science of Reading: Grades 5 & 6

Through a holistic and hands-on approach to reading, the Science of Reading course will give students the opportunity to dramatically improve their reading skills not only in school, but also in their lives beyond the classroom. This summer reading class focuses on building knowledge, reading fluency, comprehension, and improving the ability to decode and encode words. Daily activities will include visualization, note-taking, critical thinking, and reading comprehension exercises. This class focuses on building a strong foundation for each student’s following school year.

Words in the Sun: Grades 5 & 6 Writing Workshop

Students in the Words in the Sun: Grades 5 & 6 Writing Workshop will practice structuring a well-organized four-paragraph essay, whether centered on literature or driven by creativity. They will actively utilize diverse strategies during the writing process, applying its elements effectively to convey messages to various audiences for different intents. Furthermore, participants will tailor their spoken, written, and visual language to communicate with effectiveness across a range of audiences and purposes. The curriculum includes a spectrum of writing activities encompassing poetry, journaling, editing, publishing, essay writing, and crafting short answer responses.When fitting, students will have the chance to connect their summer reading obligations with their writing exercises.

Summer Scribes and Vibes: Grades 7 & 8 Writing Retreat

Students in the Summer Scribes and Vibes: Grades 7 & 8 Writing Retreat will gain familiarity with and actively practice the five-paragraph chain essay, which can be either literature-based or creatively inclined. They will actively participate and apply a diverse set of strategies in their writing endeavors, utilizing the elements of the writing process effectively to convey messages to diverse audiences for various purposes. The curriculum includes a spectrum of writing activities encompassing poetry, journaling, editing, publishing, essay writing, and crafting short answer responses. Additionally, students will modify their spoken, written, and visual language to communicate with effectiveness across a variety of audiences and purposes. When suitable, students will be provided with the chance to integrate their summer reading obligations into their writing exercises.

Morning Middle School Summer Studies can be combined with Engineering Camps and Athletic Camps for a full-day program at an additional charge; includes lunch. If your child is participating in an afternoon athletics camp, they will be bused from the Marian C. Krutulis PK-8 Campus to the Upper School Campus by Gulliver Prep buses to complete their day.
