Middle School Summer Program

This half-day, four-week academic program provides an opportunity for students entering Grades 5-8 to get an academic boost or strengthen skills to prepare for the next grade level.

Combining intensive study and small-group learning, this program provides individual attention and student engagement. Students may take one or two classes, either for remediation or enhancement.

Courses are taught by Gulliver Prep teachers and follow the Gulliver Prep curriculum with a summer twist of engaging activities and class themes.

Course Descriptions

Math, Grades 5-6 and 7-8

The goal of this course is for each student to reach mastery of the concepts taught. Mastery of a concept entails understanding, application, and long-term retention of concepts.  Students will need to earn at least an 80% on a quiz before moving on to the next concept. Students will receive one-on-one instruction as needed on each math concept. Students will also complete independent practice problems using IXL.com and may need to finish some for homework if the extra practice is needed.  Not all students are expected to move to new concepts at the same pace.

English, Grades 5-6

The summer studies 5th and 6th-grade reading course is designed to reinforce important reading skills taught during the school year. Students read the Gulliver Academy’s summer reading selections for 5th and 6th grade. Students learn reading skills that help encourage independent learning and thinking. Students also use journal entries to incorporate literary elements and vocabulary learned while reading in class. When appropriate, students will be given the opportunity to link their summer reading requirement.

English, Grades 7-8

In this class, the students work on the fundamental skills that they will need to succeed in a literature class. Literary elements and devices are reviewed through short stories and the summer reading novels. Reading comprehension strategies are also reinforced, as well as the fundamentals of paragraph and essay writing. When appropriate, students will be given the opportunity to link their summer reading requirement.

Math Bridge, Grades 6-8

The Math Bridge course provides the opportunity for students to learn and reinforce Pre-Algebra skills before they enroll in Algebra during the academic school year. This course is intended for enhancement and requires a teacher recommendation.

Writing, Grades 5-6

Students taking this course will work to become familiar with a structured four paragraph essay that may be literature based or creative in nature. Students will engage in and employ a wide range of strategies as they write and use the writing process elements appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes. In addition, students will adjust their spoken, written, and visual language to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and for different purposes. When appropriate, students will be given the opportunity to link their summer reading requirement with their writing practice.

Students will engage in and employ a wide range of strategies as they write and use the writing process elements appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes. In addition, students will adjust their spoken, written, and visual language to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and for different purposes. When appropriate, students will be given the opportunity to link their summer reading requirement with their writing practice.

Morning Middle School Summer Studies can be combined with Engineering Camps and Athletic Camps for a full-day program at an additional charge; includes lunch. If your child is participating in an afternoon athletics camp, they will be bused from the Marian C. Krutulis PK-8 Campus to the Upper School Campus by Gulliver Prep buses to complete their day.
