Finding the Right Fit: How Lucas de Godoy ‘26 Discovered His Path to Biomedical Engineering

When Lucas first arrived at Gulliver in sixth grade, he didn’t yet have a clear vision for his future. Like many students, he initially approached academics as something to master for results rather than meaning. That perspective began to shift in high school, as his experiences in the classroom encouraged him to engage more deeply with his learning. “Gulliver’s approach to learning and academics has taught me to appreciate the process of learning and not only the results,” he shares. “Now as a senior, I am grateful for the academic opportunities I was provided to discover my passion for learning.”
That shift became especially clear as Lucas explored his interest in engineering. Through Gulliver’s engineering program and his involvement in the FIRST Robotics team, he developed critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills while working alongside peers to design solutions to complex challenges. What began as a general interest quickly evolved into a more defined path.
Coursework played a key role in that evolution. Initially interested in aerospace engineering, Lucas discovered a new direction after taking advanced biology and chemistry courses. Those experiences sparked a deeper interest in science and ultimately led him to pursue biomedical engineering. His time in robotics further reinforced that decision, providing a hands-on environment where he could apply what he was learning in meaningful ways.
Beyond the classroom, Lucas extended his learning through a research internship at the University of Miami’s Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute. There, he gained real-world lab experience, analyzing echocardiograms to help detect early stages of heart failure while learning proper research techniques. “It was a major learning experience that allowed me to pursue my love of science outside the classroom,” he says.
Throughout this journey, Gulliver’s College Counseling Program played an important role in helping Lucas navigate his options and refine his path forward. With guidance and support throughout the application process, he was able to thoughtfully explore schools that aligned with his evolving interests and goals.

As a student of Gulliver’s centennial Class of 2026, Lucas’ journey is a reflection of what is possible when students are given the space to explore, the support to grow, and the confidence to choose a path that aligns with who they are becoming.
