Today, the Gulliver Merit Scholar and senior class president has found her passion for politics, represented Florida on a national stage, and developed a sense of confidence that extends far beyond the classroom.

Her journey began with a curiosity about law and government that grew through Gulliver’s International Diplomacy & Legal Studies Signature Academic Program. As an active member of Model United Nations, Elena has competed at prestigious conferences across the country, earning first-place honors at NHSMUN and MICSUN, along with recognition at HarvardMUN and NAIMUN.

“Those experiences helped me discover how much I enjoy public speaking, policy, government, and leadership,” Elena shared during a recent Middle School Open House. “I feel at home in that kind of environment.”

From Gulliver Prep to ALA Girls Nation

In July, Elena was selected as one of just two students to represent Florida at the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Girls Nation program in Washington, D.C. Her selection followed a competitive process at Girls State in Tallahassee, where approximately 300 students participated in a government simulation involving legislative debates and elections.

At Girls Nation, Elena joined 101 other student delegates from across the country and was elected Senate Floor Majority Leader by her peers. She met with Florida’s U.S. senators, participated in legislative proceedings, and visited the White House, gaining firsthand insight into the political institutions she hopes to one day serve.

Her leadership continues to earn recognition. Most recently, Elena was named one of 10 finalists from Florida for the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP), a prestigious national program supported by the Hearst Foundations. She is scheduled to travel to Tallahassee for an interview and national examination as part of the selection process.

Turning Classroom Connections into Real-World Opportunities

During her junior year, Mr. Medina, her international politics teacher, invited an immigration attorney to speak with the class. Knowing Elena’s interest in immigration policy and her family’s background, he personally introduced them. That connection led to a six-month internship working on asylum cases involving Haitian immigrants in Miami.

“It was an amazing experience made possible because my teacher knew my interests,” Elena recalled.

She is a starting center defender for the varsity water polo team, which captured the 2025 FHSAA State Championship, and has performed in more than 10 theater productions.

What began with learning to use a sewing machine has grown into a creative endeavor with a charitable purpose. Elena uses profits from Leleria in connection with her volunteer work at Ronald McDonald House Charities, bringing together her entrepreneurial interests and commitment to serving others.

“I did not have my whole life planned out when I arrived in sixth grade,” Elena shared. “Gulliver has helped me pursue not only my academic interests but also the things that make me who I am outside the classroom.”

Finding Belonging and Growing into Leadership at Gulliver

For Elena, that growth has been rooted in a sense of belonging she experienced from her earliest days at Gulliver. She still remembers arriving on campus for the first time, unsure where to find her classrooms, when a faculty member approached to help. Although she didn’t know him, he already knew her name.

“That small detail has stayed with me since sixth grade,” she recalled. “Gulliver pays attention to the little things, and those moments mean a lot when you are young.”

Now, as senior class president, Elena helps create that same sense of connection for her classmates through school traditions and student activities. Her commitment to leadership extends into academics, where she was recently elected president of the National Honor Society and vice president of Rho Kappa, the social studies honor society.

As she prepares to study political science in college, Elena carries with her the experiences that have shaped her ambitions and the relationships that have helped her pursue them. Her journey reflects an education that has challenged her to achieve at the highest levels while giving her the freedom to discover who she wants to become.

“Gulliver has truly helped shape the person I am today, and for that I am tremendously grateful,” Elena shared.
