Eighth grade students in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) presented the culmination of 29 yearlong service learning projects, all completed in small teams. These powerful, student-driven initiatives reflected remarkable compassion, creativity, and purpose.

Partnering with local organizations and community mentors, students addressed real-world needs in meaningful ways, including organizing CPR certification trainings for both Gulliver and a Title I school community, supporting NICU families, empowering young girls through self-defense education, installing sun screen dispensers on campus, and raising awareness about pancreatic cancer while honoring a member of our community. Other projects included writing and sharing a children’s book for students with autism, instilling community and belonging among school children with teddy bears made of recycled materials, and designing LEGO MRI kits for a local children’s hospital to help ease fear and bring comfort to young patients. From initial idea to final presentation, teams navigated every stage of the process, setting goals and identifying global context, managing budgets, fundraising, building timelines, and adapting when challenges arose – gaining a deeper understanding of what it truly takes to turn an idea into meaningful impact.

Just as important as what they accomplished is what they discovered along the way. Students spoke about learning what it truly means to serve, not simply completing a project, but giving their whole heart to a cause they care about, empowering others, and contributing to lasting change. They developed empathy, resilience, and a profound sense of responsibility, recognizing that their efforts can impact lives in real and lasting ways.

Experiences like these are at the core of a Gulliver education, where global citizenship is woven into how students learn, lead, and grow, preparing them to become thoughtful, compassionate leaders ready to make a difference in the world.
