This fall, Gulliver introduced its inaugural Artist in Residence Program, welcoming Miami-based artist Anthony “Mojo” Reed to campus. What began last year as an engaging assembly led by Mojo has evolved into a meaningful partnership designed to deepen students’ creative exploration and connect their art to the wider world.

The program was initiated by Don Lawrence, who invited Mojo to speak with students at both the Middle and Upper School. After seeing the lasting impression his visit made, the Visual Arts Department, with support from Jonathan Schoenwald, moved forward with bringing him back in a new, more immersive role that would allow him to mentor students, collaborate with teachers, and inspire creativity across disciplines.

During his residency, Mojo worked closely with students in the art studios, offering fresh perspectives, constructive feedback, and encouragement. His approach blended artistry and entrepreneurship, showing students how creativity can become a powerful professional pathway.

Teachers across the department shared how impactful the experience was:

“Mojo was awesome, very approachable with the kids and full of insight,” shared Mr. Golinski. “He connected with everyone and helped us explore art as a beautiful expression. His professionalism and business perspective inspired students to see how their passion can translate into purpose.”

Mr. Toledo described the residency as “truly exceptional for both me as an educator and for my students. Mojo’s charisma and approachable nature made everyone feel at ease and eager to learn. It was an unforgettable and enriching experience.”

For Mr. Goldman, the program “gave students a window into the real art world through the eyes of a multifaceted working artist. It was a worthwhile experience for everyone involved.”

Ms. Cantave reflected that “having Mojo with us was transformative. It offered students the chance to engage with new worldviews and deepen their connection with themselves and their art.”

Even beyond the art classrooms, Mojo’s impact extended to other areas. Mr. Yuriy, a Business and Entrepreneurship teacher, shared, “I can’t remember my students listening so attentively. Talking to a successful young entrepreneur was far more motivating than any lecture.”

Students, too, were inspired by his presence. Maya Welle ’28 said, “Having Mojo at Gulliver was incredible. He motivated me to keep loving what I do and helped me grow both conceptually and technically.”

Through this new Artist in Residence Program, Gulliver continues to feed students’ curiosity, encourage self-expression, and prepare them to think, create, and grow with purpose, living out our brand promise to empower learners to pursue success not just in what they achieve, but in who they become.
