Gulliver Brings Broadcast Educators Together for a Transformative Summer Experience
This summer, Gulliver welcomed 70 of the nation’s top broadcast journalism educators for the second annual Student Television Network (STN) Summer Adviser Workshop.
Co-hosted by Gulliver’s own digital mass media faculty Zach Garrett, the four-day experience was designed to elevate middle and high school media programs nationwide. Educators engaged in hands-on training in storytelling, leadership development, show production, and building programs with national impact — all inside the studios that power Gulliver’s award-winning RaiderVision broadcast.
From day one, the workshop struck a personal and professional chord. Teachers found themselves in a rare and validating space — surrounded by others who, as one attendee put it, “actually understand what we do.” Ohio educator Mark Lowrie shared that, in all his years of teaching, this was the first time he had been in a room filled entirely with others who teach the same subject — calling it “the most relevant and rewarding professional development [he’s] ever attended.” Danny Swerdlow, from Fort Lauderdale, highlighted the intentionality behind every detail — from thematically cohesive sessions to thoughtfully designed networking opportunities — saying, “As someone who plans events all the time, I really noticed the little things… Each experience was crafted and intentional.” He added, “I got to spend time with my heroes, check out their digs, and hang with cool teachers who get it.”
A growing number of returning attendees speaks volumes about the impact.
“It changed my program last year in the best way possible. It’s going to do the same again.”
— Johnathan Sessoms, Tennessee
“My one wish is that every teacher can find their perfect professional development opportunity… well, myself and my closest friends found our tribe.”
— John Chagaris, Orlando
“Imagine my surprise when Zach Garrett asked me to anchor one of their shows. I was so impressed with the students — they confidently directed me like pros. Fun stuff, for sure!”
— Cheyenne LaViolette, Washington
Reflecting on the success of the event, Mr. Garrett shared, “We did it again! With increased attendance, we had the privilege of impacting even more educators from across the country who are dedicated to building top -notch broadcast journalism programs. For us, winning isn’t about trophies or plaques — it’s about helping others reach success along the way. It’s incredible to see this community grow, and a powerful reminder that we are always stronger together.” The workshop also served as preparation and inspiration for the upcoming STN National Competition in March, where Gulliver students will compete alongside top broadcast programs from across the country.
By hosting this professional development experience, Gulliver continues to position itself as a national model for next-level teaching and learning. Through experiences like the STN Summer Adviser Workshop, we are discovering what’s possible when passion, purpose, and professional excellence come together — not just for students, but for the educators who lead them.
