Middle School Writers Earn Unprecedented Five Judges' Awards

This year’s Miami-Dade County Fair Creative Writing contest saw 1,323 entries submitted from schools throughout the county, and only 24 (about 2%) of those entries earned the highest honor – the Judges’ Award. Of those 24 selections, Gulliver students earned five, as Abigail Costales ‘29, Firas Haq ‘29, Josefina “Fini” Sanchez Lago ‘29, Emilia Meyer ‘29, and Clarissa Perez ‘29 were all honored with a special purple rosette.

As a whole, Middle School English students brought home four Judges’ Awards, 90 blue ribbons, 141 red ribbons, and 72 white ribbons, while World Languages students earned one Judges’ Award, six blue ribbons, and nine red ribbons. The students’ entries were original short stories, essays, and poetry written during class.

All of the blue ribbon and the Judges’ Award-winning pieces will be featured in The Muse, which will be available in mid-May. The Muse is an English Department-produced publication which provides a means of showcasing the creative scope of the Middle School student body.
