Since graduating from Gulliver, Bruce Alvarez ’24 has been pursuing a dual major in Finance and Studio Art at the University of Notre Dame, balancing analytical thinking with creative expression. Outside of class, he’s found ways to merge his passions, from painting to culinary arts, including writing and publishing his cookbook, Little Cut.

This month, he hosted a book event at Books & Books in Coral Gables to share the Cuban-inspired cookbook, which is a tribute to his Cuban roots, family traditions, and the way he says food brings people together.

As he puts it, ” I think it’s important to bring your culture into your cooking, it makes the food more intentional, personal, and meaningful. I’m fascinated by cooking because you can never create the “perfect” recipe — there’s always something to improve. That endless pursuit of refinement really excites me. Food is also ephemeral, which makes it even more special. It’s here for a moment, then gone, but it leaves behind memories.”

Inspired by his time as a teaching fellow and student leader at Breakthrough Miami, Little Cut is more than a cookbook—it’s a call to action. Through food, Bruce shows how anyone can use their personal passions to raise awareness and contribute to causes they care about.
