For three eighth grade students, what began as a required school project quickly evolved into a new health and safety initiative, as Lorenzo Filippi ‘29, Lorenzo Ospina ‘29, and Lucas Accordi ‘29 helped bring free EKG screenings to campus.

“The inspiration for our project came from our shared interest in sports,” said Lorenzo Filippi on behalf of the group. “At first, we hadn’t considered this idea for our Community Project, but when my sister—who competes internationally in track and field—was asked to get an EKG, my parents had no idea what it was. The physician was shocked. That moment sparked the idea for us to pursue this further.”

At the start of the 2024-25 school year, Lorenzo, Lorenzo, and Lucas embarked on their Community Project – a year-long endeavor completed during Year 3 of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP). This required project merges community engagement with service learning, challenging students to explore their responsibilities and make a meaningful impact.

After months of planning, collaboration, and securing necessary approvals from school leadership, the students’ vision became reality. In partnership with medical professionals from Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, Gulliver offered free on-campus EKG screenings for Middle and Upper School students this spring.

“Being a student at Gulliver has taught us to be helpful and kind,” said Filippi. “It inspired my friends and me to take on a project like this—not just as a school assignment, but as a way to truly help others.”
