For Mrs. Vivian Anthon, teaching first grade is more than guiding young learners through their first steps in academics—it’s about building confidence, sparking curiosity, and creating a love of learning that lasts a lifetime. A proud Gulliver parent as well as an educator, she brings a unique perspective to the classroom, blending her professional experience with a parent’s understanding of what truly supports children in their growth.

In a recent conversation, Mrs. Anthon reflected on the joy of watching her students’ tremendous progress throughout the year, the lasting impact of meaningful classroom moments, and how Gulliver’s core values shape the way she inspires her students to explore, grow, and believe in themselves.

What inspired you to become a 1st grade teacher, and how does being both an educator and a parent at Gulliver influence your approach to teaching and connecting with your students?

From a young age, I knew I loved working with children. My first job was as an assistant camp counselor for 6- and 7-year-olds, and that experience sparked my passion for teaching. I’ve always taught first grade, and when the opportunity to join Gulliver came up, I was thrilled to become part of such a respected school. Growing up in Miami, I admired Gulliver’s reputation for excellence, and now, as both an educator and a parent, I’m proud to contribute to that legacy.

As a parent at Gulliver, I have a deeper understanding of the importance of building strong relationships with both students and their families. This perspective helps me connect more meaningfully with my own students and ensures that I’m supporting them in a way that reflects the values of the school. Every day, I strive to meet the high standards that Gulliver is known for, knowing that the teachers here are also doing the same for my daughters.

As a first-grade teacher, what do you find most rewarding about working with young learners, and how do you foster a love of learning in your classroom from the very beginning of their educational journey?

What I find most rewarding about teaching first grade is witnessing the tremendous growth my students make from the beginning of the year to the end. It’s amazing to see how much they learn and how their curiosity evolves. I also love building excitement around the learning happening in our classroom. Watching 6- and 7-year-olds eagerly look forward to topics like the human body and astronomy is truly inspiring. I aim to nurture that enthusiasm from day one, creating a classroom environment where learning is always engaging and fun.

As both a teacher and a parent of children in the Lower and Middle Schools, how do you bridge the gap between your classroom experience and your perspective as a parent when it comes to supporting your students’ growth and development?

As a parent, I value the opportunities Gulliver offers my daughters to pursue their passions. As a teacher, I bring that same perspective into the classroom, inspiring my students to see the endless possibilities before them and encouraging them to reach for the stars. Being both a parent and teacher at Gulliver helps me better support my students’ growth and development.

What are some of the key goals you have for your students this year, and how do you ensure that each child’s individual learning style and needs are met in your classroom?

One of my key goals for this year is to help my first graders grow in confidence and believe in their abilities. I want them to feel proud of their accomplishments and successful in their learning. To meet each child’s unique needs, I tailor my approach to their individual learning styles, ensuring that every student feels supported and engaged in their journey.

What is one memorable experience from your time teaching at Gulliver that has made a lasting impact on you, and how do you carry that lesson forward in your teaching today?

It’s hard to pick just one memorable experience, but I cherish hearing from former students who still sing their skip-counting songs or stop me in the hallway to ask about Curious George. These moments remind me of the lasting impact we can have on students, and I carry that lesson forward by making learning fun and meaningful, knowing that even small moments can stick with them for years to come.

Rapid fire:

Your go-to commute soundtrack:  Anything Taylor Swift! Yes, I’m a proud Swiftie, and I was lucky enough to see her live at the Eras Tour.

The last movie you watched and loved (even if it was a repeat!):  Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It’s always a favorite, and I never get tired of the magic and adventure!

A Gulliver memory that will stick with you forever:  Last year was truly special for me. I had the joy of watching my older daughter, Ava, perform in the Middle School production of The Lion King, while my younger daughter, Mia, graduated from Kindergarten. Those moments will stay with me forever!

Favorite weekend activity: My favorite weekend activity is spending time with family and friends in the Keys. It’s the perfect way to relax and enjoy the outdoors!
